Stew/casserole, with crusty bread or jacket pots and green veg. Can't go wrong with Beef in Red Wine, IME. Make it a few days ahead, flavours develop and just reheat for an hour in the oven.

chilli con carne, a big one in a big pot.

serve with crusty bread to mop it up

[Declaration of interest - I'm a man]

If it was me, and it was winter, then I'd definitely appreciate a big casserole with fresh bread. The thought of beef in red wine is making my mouth water!

Or maybe sausage and mash with some mixed veg and onion gravy?

oooh beef in red wine is one of my favourites and i do it well. yes i think lots of crusty bread will go down well.

ok thank you all for that, appreciate the male perspective.
