Perfect toffee icing - how???

I want to make a buttercream style toffee flavoured icing but am not sure what the best way would be. I tried making butter icing and stirring in toffee ice cream sauce but it was sickeningly sweet. Anyone got any suggestions?

You can get a toffee-ish flavor and colour by using golden icing sugar instead of the normal kind. Not as strong in flavour as real toffee of course but it's a good shortcut. I haven't done buttercream this way but did use it for glacé icing to drizzle over a banana cake with good results.

adding a dash of maple syrup to gastronomes advice above, will give you a nice toffee buttercream ( I use it to top my coffee walnut cupcakes) Wink
