I have a load of recipes that use a 'cup' as a measure. How many fluid oz are in an american cup. ANd is there a difference between an american cup and a british one??

I think an American cup is 250ml, same as the British one.

I'm not sure it matters provided you use the same measure throughout.

There are Australian cups too of course. Not sure where they fit in

This is what you need though - US Cups to UK fl oz

This webpage gets into it in quite firm detail. It's certainly true that brown sugar is generally "packed" in American recipes. And they say an American cup = 237 ml. I get on fine with my 250ml cups, though.

I also use 250 without any probs

meant to add I hate all the weighing malarky!

zebratwizzler · 01/12/2005 18:50

I was at my One Stroke Painting Certification Class!!!! I now paint quite beautifully! So.. the measurements... You are always safe to weigh everything on a scale to be sure. One cup liquid US is 8 oz liquid US. In the UK, your cup is 8.3 ozs. Does this make it easier? Sorry I wasn't around.
