Pavlova - how many egg whites?

The recipe I have says 3, but I have made it before, and written "8?" next to it - can't remember why, but I guess becuae 3 seemed too little.

How many egg whites do you use when making pavlova?

I suppose it depends how big a pavlova you want! Does the 8 mean 8 inches diameter? This recipe uses 4 egg whites and is 9" in diameter so for 8" 3 egg whites should be OK.
