Is Cognac a type of brandy?

or at least a good substitute? Have scoured drinks cupboard (which has been a bit spartan since arrival of dd and ds) and need brandy to start my Christmas cake off with.

Can anyone help????

Cognac is good brandy, from the Cognac region of France. I'm pretty sure.

Yes! Cognace is the leading french region for producing brandy, with all the big names, Courvoisier, Henessy etc all based there.

I bought a great big bottle of brandy to start my christmas cake off with.

There's hardly any left now, and I haven't fed the cake that much.

(But I did make my cake in October, I hasten to add! )
