If I was you I'd buy a nice plain chocolate cake and bung some bits on the top

Whats the theme?

I think that if you search Nigella, she gives a recipe with buttermilk (i think) that she reckons is good for kids cakes, not sure which book maybe How to Eat look on her website

V simple choc sponge cake:

Blend 2 tbsps cocoa and 4 tbsps hot water and leave to cool
Once cool, add 225g soft butter, 225g caster sugar, 225g s/r flour, 4 eggs, 2tsps baking powder and beat well (I use a mixer)
Divide between 2 8inch sandwich tins and cook for 30 mins at 160c

Although you'd prob need square tins!

Madeira cake works well if you are going to be 'carving' the cake into a shape as it contains slightly more flour which results in a firmer sponge. For fillings I use either vanilla or chocolate buttercream, chocolate ganache or just nutella.
