I find they can take anywhere between 45 mins - 2 hours.

I never soak red lentils, you don't need to.

No need to soak red lentils. When you cook your chickpeas, boil them really hard for the first ten minutes, then turn the heat down and cook gently. As Enid says, the time varies but I find it usually takes just over an hour once you turn the heat down.

I always pressure cook chick peas after soaking them - only takes 8-10 mins, pretty much regardless of how old they are.

Nigella Lawson has a very good recipe in "How to Eat" for soaking chick peas - involves mixing floup and bicarb in the soaking water: guarantees to soften them.
