How long is safe to have cold chicken in the fridge..

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't eat meat, and tend to buy the pre cooked chickens for partner and child...and a friend freaked me out the other day by saying she never kept white meat for longer than a day or two in the fridge. I thought it was OK for longer than that. What's the general opinion?

General rule is if you don't use it within three days of purchase/opening it should be disposed of as bacteria levels will have risen and spoilage will have started even if you cannot see or smell it.

trouble is with pre-cooked you dont know how long it has been cooked for.

I would go by the sell by date.

If I am cooking it myself, I and the children have eaten it four days later with no ill effects. I always buy organic chicken though.
