... McCain oven chips? I keep thinking I should make my own, but there's nothing bad in them - or is there?

don't know... what does the label say?

hornbag · 15/11/2005 22:33

Not sure whats added but if you feel bad why not make some potato wedges - I amazed myself tonight by how good they turned out ( I'm no cook believe me!).
Slice potato in half and then slice into long thin wedges. Put in a bowl, stir in some olive oil to coat them , add seasoning/herbs/spices (whatever you fancy) and then put in pre-heated baking tray in a very hot oven for about 30mins (give them a jiggle evry now and again).

I didn't think there was anything too bad in them but they are processed. Although you can make your own oven chips very easily, similar to hornbag, although cut them into chip shapes, par boil them if you can be bothered and brush them with some olive oil, stick them in a hot oven.

Watching with interest to see what everyone says about McCains as my DSs have them once a week.

Emkana, if you don't grow the potatoes yourself, dig them out of the ground with your bare hands, grow your own olives, then trample them under your bare feet to get the first cold pressing and personally evaporate seawater yourself to get the purest salt, then roast your chips over a fire you made using flint, you're a bad mummy, alright?

The plain McCain Oven chips are fine as the only ingredients are potato and sunflower oil. I alternate between those and potato wedges as hornbag suggests - but I drizzle those in oil so no difference!

There are no stabilisers or anything in teh plain McCain chips.

I make chips using potatoes from the supermarket, chopped up inyo chip shapes and then....

... I deep fry them in vegetable oil that comes in a big plastic bottleand serve them with non organic eggs from the supermarket >

they are delicious.

I like potato wedges made with little tiny new potatoes, with the skins still on. Very tasty, and a big hit with all the boys.

chipmonkey · 16/11/2005 02:28

What, colditz, no lard?

colditz · 16/11/2005 11:38

No, I don't fry in lard, but I have a friend who does

Has anyone else on mn actually tasted chips fried in lard? You hear it said, and you think "EW" but actually...

Phoooaaarr. They are gorgeous.

Our local chipper fries in lard, yummy!
Also does chips with garlic mayo topped with grated cheese.
