I could give anything up I think, wine, coffee, chocolate, but not bread.

Starches are important in a healthy diet so it's not necessary for anyone to give up bread. However, when you eat starch -especially the highly refined sort such as white flour, white rice, cornstarch, mashed potato, sugar - it turns to glucose very quickly in the bloodstream giving you an energy surge. Insulin then kicks in to reduce your blood-sugar levels which leads, quite quickly to an energy dip. Result... you feel a little hungry, your tummy rumbles, you run out of steam and you reach for more of the same.

Cold turkey not necessary but you can help yourself by doing the following

  • Try to cut out refined sugar and refined starches from your diet
  • Eat moderate amounts of wholegrain/seeded bread and other unrefined carbohydrates e.g. wholemeal pasta, brown rice, new potatoes, pulses, nuts. The fibre slows down the rate at which they are converted to sugar so your energy levels stay more stable
  • Eat plenty of vegetables for the same reason
  • Make sure each meal contains some protein (either animal or vegetable) and fat since these are natural appetite suppressants
  • Eat/snack regularly. If you never let yourself get too hungry, stodgy foods like bread become less attractive.

Bread is good. Enjoy bread.

Sometimes feeling like that about a food can suggest you are actually intolerant to it.

You can be intolerant to something without realising it - I didn't know I was dairy intolerant (and didn't think I could ever give up Dairy Milk).

I've also read that craving hi carb foods such as white bread can be a sign that you suffer with Candida.

Though it can also be a sign that you lack something in it - I craved potatoes until I discovered my potassium levels were low - now its okay - I don't any more

Sorry lost a line Confused - Breads a good source of B vits, so is it possible you are low in those? & thats why you crave it

MoreBeta · 21/05/2011 13:50

schroeder - I used to be addicted to bread. I could easily eat a half a loaf in one sitting. I craved it, sometimes eating the end off a French stick on the way home from the shop. An acupuncturist once told me people get addicted to foods that harm them. Years later I found I am gluten intolerant.

You just have to go completely cold turkey and never go back to anything with wheat/barley in. I lost a huge amount of weight and feel so much better.

I was/am a bread addict.

I could eat up to 15 slices of white bread in a day at one time, and if there was crusty bread about then god help me.

I constantly felt ill though and so I switched to wholemeal bread, and set myself a limit of 3 slices a day.

It worked and I lost over a stone too.

Unfortunatly, I have fallen off the wagon in a bad way, and i'm now really struggling to give it up again.

PrisonerZero · 22/05/2011 19:35

I love bread, thick white sliced, crusty cobs, croissants, baguettes etc - its all I would eat if I thought I could get away with it.

I get a headache if I don't eat bread Shock

I don't like brown bread.

PrisonerZero · 22/05/2011 19:37

Also rice, pasta and potatoes - I love potato sandwiches Blush

schroeder · 22/05/2011 20:13

ppeatfruit · 23/05/2011 12:55

It gives me bad constipation so we try to keep well away from it.

bigTillyMint · 23/05/2011 15:03

I love bread too, but only the uncut and interesting type!

Luckily ready sliced bread doesn't do it for me, so that's what I buy for the DC's packed lunches - nice stuff on the weekend only Grin
