Eton mess question

Ok - I want to do Eton mess for a diner party I am invited on Friday. How long before the party can I prepare them? (ie can I do it on the morning, for the evening?) and also will it cope with a car trip of 30 mins? Or should I assemble the cream and meringue at my friend?

Assemble at the last minute. It just turns to chewy mush otherwise. Tasty chew mush, obviously, but mush none the less. Assuming the other guests have teeth, I'm sure you'd all prefer that.
