Help an old friend is bringing his new partner to dinner on Friday and she is allergic to wheat, eggs and dairy. Can anyone think up a desert as the best I've come up with so far is fruit salad. Thanks.

The Pig in the Kitchen blog is worth a look - lots of special dietary ideas there.

FWIW, I don't eat eggs or dairy at the moment, and fruit salad is all I've come up with!

Fruit salad actually sounds lovely, especially if you have it after something like a tagine or curry (which also has the advantage of being wheat, egg and dairy free if you don't use ghee or yoghurt, and serve with quinoa or rice). You could just do quartered strawberries with a bit of sugar and balsamic vinegar on them - perfectly summery.

If you don't feel like that, how about sorbet? You could make a lovely home-made strawberry one in the freezer using a plastic tub and a fork. Or ice cream made with coconut milk? Or baked apples, or a crumble made with non-dairy butter in the crumble?

I guess you could try making something from a site like this or a cookbook like this but I often find if I'm not cooking this sort of stuff all the time I don't have the right things to use in the recipes like xanthan gum, barley flour, ground linseeds etc. and I always find vegan and gluten free baked goods come out like lead (perhaps I'm just doing it wrong!)
