difference between fairy cakes/buns and cupcakes?

At first I just thought it was the name but I bought the Cupcakes book from the primrose bakery and the recipe is different. When I make fairy cakes/buns I just use 100g of butter, sugar and flour and 2 eggs but with the cupcakes in the book they use twice as much sugar to butter and flour and add milk. The result was quite heavy crunchy instead of my usual light buns.

The reviews on amazon rave about the recipes so is it something i'm doing wrong? I love all the additions of fairy cakes such as polenta and blueberry but the mass of sugar puts me off.

Anyone shed any light on it?

Main difference is about £1.30 :)
