Gammon steaks

I bought some gammon steaks on a whim from the farmers' market - not something I usually cook. I am nervous of turning them into rubber! Advice please - do I grill or fry (or do in the oven?)/what temperature/how long for? Thanks.

Bump. Please! Or it will be gammony leather for tea...

If there is a fat layer round them, but it with scissors 1cm apart which helps is to not curl up. Then grill under a hot grill til the fat is starting to brown & sizzle, turn it over and do the same. They really don't take long to cook.

Or you can spread them with mustard and then brown sugar, gives it a lovely crust and flavour.

Thank you I will remember for next time ( brown sugar thing sounds nice). It was last night though, I had to very bravely go it alone ... just binges them under a hot grill for a couple of minutes each side and they were lovely! Am not scared of them any more :)

Sorry, didn't look at the date. Yay to liking them! Gammon is a bit old fashioned now I guess, but relatively cheap, quick and easy, We love it. They are even lovely if you go retro and put a piece of pineapple or a fried egg on them (not at the same time though).

I would grill and serve with an onion sauce

I make 2 recipes with gammon, during summer (warmer weather) I make Jo Pratt's recipe of gammon glazed with maple syrup served with pineapple & chilli salsa and crispy potatoes - it is lick-the-plate-clean delicious.

In colder weather I make a recipe from delicious magazine: grilled (or sauted) gammon with potato & swede gratin...again it is utterly gorgeous!

M&S do very nice gammon and often on special offer, I usually stock up and bung them in the freezer.

Thanks - not come across Jo Pratt before - is that from a book?
