Wasabi Paste

I've got a serious sushi-making habit at the moment and a tube of wasabi paste to pep it all up a bit on serving. As it's going to take me a while to get through even this small amount, has anyone found any alternative uses for the old Japanese nasal decongestant? A marinade, perhaps?

Mix it with mayo, and then use it like you would normal mayo.
Marinading meat - I did pork - before cooking.

Yes I've used it for a number of other things - pretty much anything you'd use horseradish with:

Mix into mayonnaise and use as you would any flavoured mayo - with chips, salmon, on a burger...
Use it to spice up the yolk mixture when making devilled eggs
Mix it with mashed potatoes
Spread it on roast beef sandwiches
Mix it with breadcrumbs and other bits to make a crust for fish
Mix into the potato and fish mixture when making fishcakes
Use to make an asian style dressing for salad or noodles with lime juice and sesame oil

Where did you buy the tube of wasabi please? I've been trying to find some for ages.

I think nigella adds to her crab cakes....

Basically just use it as you would mustard. :)

Got the wasabi at a big branch of Tesco. They had quite a good selection from the 'Yukata' brand range... nori sheets, rice vinegar, bamboo rolling mats, sushi rice etc. My other source is the Wing Yip chinese superstore but they're a bit further apart.

Thanks - Will try a Tesco (never thought of Tesco!)

It was in a funny place in my local Tesco. Not in the 'World Foods' section and not with the soy sauce and other oriental, type ingredients. I had to hunt about a bit but the Yukata range is quite easy to spot because it's all in red and white.

I find it lasts well in the fridge so we use it in a dip whenever we make or buy sushi or need a 'hot' addition to anything.
