Hi
I have a six month old hungry baby boy. I have recently started weaning him and switched to sma follow on milk (i know the arguments for and against switching but decided to as he is a big baby for his age). He was having approx 240ml 4 times a day. He is now on solids twice a day - lunch and dinner which I have gradually increased. The guide on the sma follow on milk says 180ml (500-600ml a day). My LO is having approx 700-800ml a day but the most I have given him in one bottle is 180ml. Is it ok to give him more than 180ml of follow on milk in one bottle, i.e. 240ml? Or is 180ml the max that should be given in one feed?? I am sure this is probably a stupid question, but the last thing I want to do is bombard his little system!

I would just give him as much as he wants. When I used follow on I just gave the same amount as usual.

Great. I suppose i'll soon be able to tell if there's a problem. He's not greedy, just needs a lot of feeding because of his weight.
thanks!

i see no problem with giving him half a pint of milk if thats what he wants.
Im sure you can buy super big bottles, and i doubt they would even make them if you couldnt.

Just be aware though.... although he is stil little at the moment, and milk IS currently the most important part of his diet, soon he will need to be eating, and you dont want huge volumes of milk to take away his appetite for real food Smile Id allow him as much as he wants to drink for a few months yet though

I would talk to your HV about this as he could just be thirsty. He may be big, but is that because you're giving him more than the recommended amount of formula milk? That stuff is very rich and calorific, so I'd probably follow the feeding guidelines if it was me.

he's only having 32oz along with 2 meals with each bottle being 8oz. The 500-600mls relates to when they are having 3 proper meals a day so when you introduce another meal you should find that he drops his milk intake by himself.

Thanks for the info. I have given him a couple of oz of water every now and then. I don't think it's because he is thirsty. He has been a big baby since birth...was over 10lb, he's not fat just sturdy and long.
