Stuck for ideas for one-year old

Seem to have got stuck on what to feed DS.

He prefers to self feed. Sometimes quite adeptly with a spoon, more often with fingers. Life is messy.

Any suggestions?

What does he have now?

How about:
Carrot & hummus pitta pockets
Sandwiches of all kinds including peanut butter & banana; cream cheese; hummus etc...
Potato cakes
Muffins
omelettes
Pasta salad
Quiche
Cookies
Cheese straws

These are all from a book called 'Baby & Child Vegetarian Recipes' by Carol Timperley. I'm sure you could do versions with meat in if you wanted to.

My 10 month old has just started wanting to feed herself too. Nightmare. Have you noticed how mashed weetabix or porridge is like concrete to scrape off ?

You can cook all sorts of things in a scotch pancake type thing. DD had cheese and sweetcorn pancake this lunchtime. SR flour, egg and wee bit milk to a thick batter, grate cheese and couple tbsps sweetcorn in. spoon into thick bottomed, lightly greased frying pan and turn when bubbles form on surface. Great favourite.

Pancakes - brilliant idea. That's a project for the weekend.

Sausages - meat or veggie?

At the moment he seems to have a lot of pasta, loves pizza, bread with goat's cheese/hummus/nut butter; scrambled eggs/eggy bread. Loves fruit, but its all a bit bread-based at the moment!

Meat or fish in any form is nearly always rejected out of hand.

As for the mess...thinking of investing in one of those all-in-one suits with a hood like they wear when they are doing forensic investigations on telly. Its getting better now but mealtimes used to require a complete change of outfit for both of us.

DS is very funny with meat and fish. Fishcakes always seem to be OK though. In fact we're very bread based at the moment too! Crumpets a favourite at the moment.

madmarchflare · 04/11/2005 21:25

Omlettes?

Re. Sausages. Have you tried the vegetarian frankfurters you get in the meat free freezer section of the supermarket? Tivali make them - no tsure who else does. I was at a 6 year old's party the other week where all the kids had hot dogs and because alot of the kids eat Halal the parents had done all the hot dogs with the veggie frankfurters. None of the kids seemed to notice any difference.

Just thought they might be a start because they're less 'heavy' than regular sausages. My 10 month old seems to like them anyway.

Thanks everyone. Entrusted all babycare to DH today whilst I attempted to work - as a result the boy basically had breakfast for every meal. (Weetabix/yoghurt/banana).

Am resolved to attempt many new things this week. Happier with the idea of veggie sausages for the moment so thansk for tip witchycat.
