Out of date chocolate

Choc doesn't usually get a chance to go out of date around here so I don't know the answer to this Grin

I've just been given a couple of Advent calendars (don't ask!) and the best before date is in May 2011. Will they still be OK at Christmas?

We're already eating chocolate Santas & tree decorations etc. which feels really wrong on a lovely Spring evening, but Advent calendars seem even worse somehow, please tell me they'll be OK 8 months out of date!

They might be, but I doubt if they would taste as good. Best before is just a guideline and, in my experience, out of date chocolate has a nasty stale taste. I would just eat the chocolate now and buy new ones for Christmas. It isn't as if they cost a lot.

I reckon they'll be fine.
DD would shove em down her neck so fast she'd not taste them anywayGrin

Advent calendars usually have really low-grade chocolate that usually tastes pretty disgusting even when it is fresh. During a hot summer, the chocolate will melt a bit and then resolidify. As chocolate is fat-based, it can oxidize a bit (the worst I've seen is chocolate that looks dappled and tastes stale). I just found a couple of easter eggs from last year - they have changed shape, presumably during last summer's heat wave.

Do your family a favor and let the children eat the advent calender chocolates as an Easter treat Grin
