What exactly do I put inside a birthday cake??

Am making ds's birthday cake.

Round cake, just the top covered in icing (that roll out stuff whatever it's called) then figures on top.

What do I put in the middle?? Butter cream? Jam? Something else?

I do not know this as I hate buttercream and icing and therefore hate birthday cake.

Do whatever you like! If you dont like buttercream you could just put some jam in on its own. Or I have put chocolate spread in before for a fussy DD who doesnt like jam or buttercream.

Would it not be a bit dry with just jam?

Gah every year this stresses me out! Wish I could just make a chocolate cake and be done with it!

I just put good quality jam in mine. Otherwise it is too sweet imho. I have used Nutella before but found it a bit cloying.

icing sugar and butter/marge. you can add a bit of boiling water to make it softer. and a bit of lemon or orange juice for flavour.

or add a squirt of golden syrup. makes the butter icing 'go' further

I was hoping you might have room for a woman in a spangly leotard to pop out of the top. You could do cream and jam or some of that icing and cream cheese stuff. Or even make a round of ice cream (let ice cream get softish, spread on a piece of foil or something to the right size for the cake, put back into the freezer) and pop it in at the last minute. In my defense I haven't tried this, but I think it might work and be an interesting alternative.

Buttercream every time. So that the teeth sink in delightfully easily and the whole mouthful is a sweet delight and not claggy and dry.

if its just a plain sponge i love having whipped cream and jam in the middle. less sickly than stuffed with buttercream.

Fresh cream and strawberries sounds like a plan..

Definitely whipped cream and either fruit or jam. Much, much nicer than buttercream.

Does really depend on how much you love that sugar rush.

Whipped cream makes sponge soggy and can go off if the cake isn't eat quickly.
