is evaporated milk (american recipe) the same as condensed milk?

No. Condensed milk is the sweet stuff you use to make desserts and eat out of the can and make yourself sick.
Evaporated milk (aka carnation milk in some places) is milk that has had something done to it. Can use it as a substitute for milk and cream.

thanks serenity it's an ice-cream recipe so probably wouldn't do to have extra sweetener added to it :)

Evaporated milk has had half the liquid reduced out of it. In my experience, you can use whole milk instead or even single cream (I think that's what you call half and half).

Yum. Homemade ice cream!
