Off to see Macbeth in the park in a while, can anyone give me any picnic ideas? I've got to champagne but not much further. Has to be portable, not suffer in the heat and not ready made (I'm not in the UK so not much ready made stuff here). Oh and if I can avoid taking forks and knives, so much the better!

Have you got a cold box to keep the food in? If not crisps, biscuits, bread and make a tomato dip (grate tomatoes and add lemon juice and olive oil) serve with olives and champers. Fruit for afters.

a couple of kg fresh prawns (cooked) from the fishmongers (not a tub from supermarket), fresh bread such as french sticks, mayonnaise, and tissues for wiping hands. Buy some smoked salmon, cream cheese, and other cheese such as Brie or Camembert for the bread, for those who dont like seafood. Some containers/bags for storing the waste after you have peeled the prawns.

Yes, I've got a cold box but live in Singapore so it will be about 30C. Love the prawns idea - we get HUGE prawns here. With enough wipes, they'll be great (although we'll be sitting in the dark so might peel beforehand and leave the tails on as handles).

Like the dippy idea MumsiNonna - can add in a tapenade, hummous etc

Thanks and keep the ideas coming!

I would do the following:

Cold, cooked chicken drumsticks or thighs (marinate them and cook in morning, let cool) - wraps ends in foil and eat with hands, could also do this with marinated lamb chops

carrot, cucmber, pepper sticks, halfed tomatoes, celery sticks

dips: hummous, yoghart with lime and chilli

Huge tub of fresh strawberries for dessert

Jamie O has a recipe in one of his books for a picnic kind of loaf, which I vaguely remember as a packet of shortcrust pastry rolled out into a rectangle, with proscuitto, mozzarella, basil leaves and chopped sundried tomatos layered on. You then put a row of hard boiled eggs down the middle, fold long sides together and crimp, wodge into a ring and crimp the ends together. Egg wash and bake, prob at about 180 until golden brown. Serve at room temp.

I can't find the recipe online I'm afraid but this is so delicious, it's worth a go!
