Vegetarian barbecue recipes?

My lovely vegetarian aunt is coming to stay with us soon and I would love to barbecue (weather permitting) when she is here.

Does anyone have any lovely veggie bbq recipes I could try? My aunt (aged 80+) cannot eat anything spicy and cannot eat peppers.

Personally, I love simple veggie kebabs on a BBQ. Usually courgettes, pepper( obv not for your aunt, though!) mushrooms and red onion. Halloumi would be a tasty addition to these, I think! Corn on the cob is also delicious barbecued.

Thanks, JoyceBarnaby. I had seen some lovely looking veggie kebabs on the BBC food website but most of them had cheese on and the reviews said that the cheese did not do well on the skewer... any experience with that? Think I may try some anyway!

halloumi skewers

I haven't done these on a bbq but I have done them in a griddle pan and don't see why they wouldn't work on a bbq.

I always struggle to skewer the halloumi but it's worth persevering - don't cut it too small as it is prone to splitting. If it's just me I sometimes just barbecue slabs of halloumi and have it in place of the meat that everyone else is having - doesn't look that exciting but is easier to keep in one piece.

If you want to ring the changes a bit, I sometimes do halloumi + fig. Still trying to work out whether this is more for ponciness' sake than because it tastes nice (first had it in a restaurant - didn't come up with it myself) but it tends to go down well.

These are nice. But they do sometimes fall off the skewers.

Delia's are my faves though.

There was another thread on this a few weeks ago - here it is - I recommended veg kebabs or stuffed mushrooms in foil parcels, but there are some other good sounding recipes on there.

Thanks, Everyone! Those ideas are brilliant.

Big mushrooms, pour on some sweet chili sauce top with blue cheese and grill-sounds a bit odd but its yum

halloumi on a bbq would be nice, it goes well with a lime and caper sauce - if that's not too strong a taste
veggie burgers / sausages and roasted red peppers, aubergines, fennel, onion warm salad

Thanks again, those recipes sound lovely! My aunt has to avoide spicey foods and peppers, but I can play around with those ideas.

These ideas do sound lovely, don't they? I am definitely going to have stuffed mushrooms over the next week!!

Numberfour - I know you asked me a question about the halloumi, but I think that question has been pretty well answered already! Keep the bits of cheese nice and big and you shouldn't have a problem.

Hope you and your aunt enjoy the BBQ and the weather holds out for you!

About halloumi splitting on the skewer - I find the thin wooden skewers much better for this (and for mushrooms and other more fragile things) than the metal skewers.

Thanks, JoyceB! Hope so too.
