pearl barley you just chuck into stews and soups - a handful or two.

only decent thing I know with green lentils is quite soupy and has bacon in it.

You could make a kind of veg dish by browning onions, garlic and diced carrots and stewing the lentils in with that and veg stock till done.

can do a bolognese sauce and use green lentils instead of meat. onions, lots of tomatoes, leeks, carrots etc

fredly · 25/10/2005 17:12

Onions, garlic, bits of carrots, rosemary, all cooked in stock for 1/2 hour. When it's done add a little cream, it's yum.

gingerbear · 25/10/2005 17:15

I use them to make bolognese sauce instead of mince.
Nice as filling for lasagne

dhansak style curry this
or
sometimes i make a nut and lentil loaf:
tin green lentils drained
grated carrot x2
grated courgette x1
chopped onions x2
chopped clove garlic
packet chopped nuts
teaspoon vegemite
dash chilli sauce
veg stock or egg to bind

mix everything in a bowl
grease loaf tin with olive oil
line bottom of tin with a strip of greaseproof paper
place mixture in loaf tin
bake for 30 mins at 200c or until top feels crusty
turn out and serve with salad

Frannykenstein left this idea for pearl barley on a thread of mine the other day:
Barley risotto: cook leeks, peas, sun-dried tomatoes and courgettes (again, whatever is in the cupboard), add barley and veg stock and simmer until creamy and tender

Thought it sounded nice, so passing on!
