Help with Come Dine With Me menu - not on TV

Hi

My friends and I have been doing our own version of Come Dine with Me, each hosting the other 4 of us to their houses for an evening. Standard has ranged between a 4 course dinner with choice of dessert - and a simple italian bolognese night.

I'm going last and need a really kick-ass night to round it all off.

I think I may have decided on the main - and potentially the dessert - but don't have an idea on starters - or whether it all goes together or not. The group are pretty fussy - no fish or seafood and includes one vegetarian.

My thought for the main is wilted spinach with dauphinoise (spelling!) potatoes, with a fillet steak stacked on top with peppercorn butter.

For dessert I do a really nice chocolate truffle torte - but as it is quite rich, I wondered whether to also include a lemon sorbet or perhaps even a trio of taster desserts - what would go with those two?

Starter - I'm at a loss.

Oh and are there any ideas for themes or entertainment - I had considered making it evening dress just because it's the last one - the rest have been very very casual.

Any ideas gratefully received :)

How about aubergine stuffed with roasted mediterranean vegetables in spicy tomato sauce?

Or a red onion marmelade and brie tart?

If you're going to do a trio, maybe something nutty in pastry to go with the others...

Evening dress sounds fab, possible Strictly Come Dancing, just to hit the jackpot of reality tv Wink especially if you know someone who could give a dancing lesson between courses?

For starters - how about a soup? Spicy Butternut squash, or curried parsnip? A lighter one maybe, chinese chicken noodle (tofu for the veggie).

Or a mozzerella & tomato & basil salad stack? Or a homemade pate and oatcakes?

I know you have a dessert, but just as another suggestion, I like choc fondue with friend's. Really social and good fun. Can add Cassis or other liquer (sp). Serve with fruit/ marshmellows. Forfits for dropping fruit if you like.
