I have friends/a couple coming over for dinner next Friday.

What do you think of this:

Kir royals (to begin with!)

Smoked mackerel pate with rocket and nice toast (with remainder of cava!)

Boeuf bourginnon (+ nice red)

Creme brulee

Coffee

Does that sound ok? It's not too retro is it?

I'd be very happy with that! and you can do most of it ahead of time so you can talk to your friends and not spend all evening in the kitchen

What veg/potatoes were you thinking of with the bourgignon?

If you're worried about sounding retro put a twist on the dishes, maybe a fruit layer under the creme brulee, or Baileys in the creme? I have done a variation on classic bourgignon where you cook it as normal, then top it with slices of French bread thickly buttered with garlic butter and put under the grill to toast them - mmmm

Nothing wrong with retro! As long as it's 'properly' done with good ingredients (I'm sure you will be Grin). It's why they were so good first time round and avoids you looking like a slave to the latest celeb chef.

I'd eat your leftovers!

I'd be happy with that too. I don't think it's too retro - not in the prawn cocktail, steak diane, black forest gateau league.
