Toy story birthday cake

DS would like a toy story or buzz lightyear birthday cake for his 3rd birthday. I enjoy baking and icing cakes so I'd like to make it myself, however I've nor done many before so don't want to try anything too extravagant. Also I won't have a great deal if time to prepare anything too fancy.

I have seen buzz lightyear cake tins which look ok but cost around £20, even on eBay. Plus I'm not sure how easy the cake would be to ice.

I have googled for ideas and seen a few that look ok, although the buzz lightyear ones tend to look pretty bad! I'm leaning towards using plastic character models on either a round fondant iced cake (seen a nice design on flickr) or a bed (like Andy's bed) with the characters on it.

But I'm not sure, so if anyone has any better ideas I'd be grateful for any suggestions. And even more grateful for any photos!

P.s. I know those edible paper cake toppers are cheap and easy but I fancy something a bit more adventurous.

It would probably be easiest to do it as a round cake with a head and shoulders large fondant of buzz.

Thinking similar image as this picture

Because it would be relatively large it would be easy to do.

If you are especially talented this would be a winner in my book

Thanks for those links. The first us made using the expensive cake tin, tho it's useful to see how the cake looks when completed as I'd not seen one before.

The second link has some gorgeous cakes on. Not sure I'm talented enough for those bur could perhaps adapt one to suit my skill level.
