Walnuts

My dp as just climbed our walnut tree, given the branches a good shake (of course, making sure the kids were underneath ), after we had picked up as many as we could we have 2 dustbin sacks full. The tree still has loads more on it!!!

What am I going to do with them?

I think that they need 'drying' out, I usually put them in the airing cupboard in a cardboard box but there is so many of them, I've already given some away.

They are a good cure for constipation too!!

Squirrel3 · 15/10/2005 17:07

rummum, I live in kent.

I personally don't like them straight from the tree, I just don't know how to 'dry' so many of them out.

once they are out of the green cases, they can be eaten MMmmmm
if they are all wet they need to be dried out, if they are damp they still can be eaten, don't forget it only the inside you eat not the shell

Think I'm going to be making lots of date and walnut cakes etc,

Anyone got any better ideas?

BTW I am not a great cook

traditionally in trays of sand or sawdust.....who has time or space?

How about baking trays in the airing cupboard - for a day or two

We just pick them and have them in baskets round the logburner

Year before last we had 35lbs and we put them in little bags and sold them for the school

Last year we had 76 walnuts, this year seems a much better crop....not 35lbs yet tho and our tree is too high to climb!

rummum · 15/10/2005 17:12

you could try selling them...
you don't see many wet walnuts for sale,
try your local greengrocer..

suzywong · 15/10/2005 17:12

crush them up and have them on you porridge ion the morning with honey

Squirrel3 · 15/10/2005 17:24

Katymac, I haven't weighed them, maybe I should. We have had such a bumper crop this year!

BTW I am very of you having a log burner

I'll probably give them away to friends, family and neigbours.

Or I could make some Walnut Christmas Decorations

Do you have a pet charity - you could raise money for them,

I think you should weigh them on the bathroom scales

bobbybob · 16/10/2005 05:22

We sold them to a man who made walnut oil.
