Cake for a 60th birthday

It's my Dad's 60th in a fortnight and I want to make him a really lovely birthday cake. I'm not bad baker, but need something fairly safe that doesn't require mastering any complicated techniques as I haven't the time to start from scratch if it all goes wrong....

At the risk of sounding a bit simple, I want it to look like a 'proper' old fashioned birthday cake - ie. more than one layer, fillings, something nice on top. I also quite fancy doing 60 candles but they'd have to be pretty slim or something other than the traditional stick candles.

Does anyone have any suggestions, either tried and tested recipes of your own or a shove in the right direction for a recipe book recipe? Ingredient-wise, the only thing I'm not keen on including is nuts.

Thank you!

Probably not what you mean but for a friend's 60th we put a 60 watt lightbulb on the cake (or if you're clever you could make one out of fondant?).

Ha! I love that idea but fear my fondant skills severely lacking...
