Question about pasta weight

knottyhair · 03/02/2011 09:34

I'm trying to apply sensible portion control (ahem) but I can't find out how much cooked pasta weighs compared to raw pasta. For example, I weigh out my portion in raw pasta as 75g when cooking for me, DP & DS, but I can't be sure I'm dishing up the correct amount once it's cooked. I've googled it and have found about 3 different answers. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks.

simply measure how much your 75g is relative to the rest that you are cooking and then serve yourself that proportion. So if 75g is about a quarter of the raw weight, it will be about a quarter of the mass of pasta once cooked

Or you can weigh the bowls once you've served up the food and redistribute accordingly. I do this whenever I'm unsure about portion size.

For what it's worth, I'm 5'3 and have a sedentary day job but do a reasonable amount of hard cardio exercise and I normally weigh out 60g of raw pasta for a main meal or 50g for lunch for me, and about 80g for DH who is much taller and a bit more active. But obviously you have to do what's right for you...

I think 75g is far to large a portion - sorry probably not what you want to hear, but the label of how much is on the packet and I think 50g would still be ample raw to cooked.

Think three tbsp cooked pasta and leave the rest in the dish to put in the fridge

A weight watchers large portion is 60g dried weight if that helps...

TrillianAstra · 03/02/2011 11:53

I think you are all having small portions - I would have 100g for a main meal portion for a person not on a diet, or 75g if they are trying to not eat too much.

ivykaty44 · 03/02/2011 12:01

I thought 75 was small until I eat left overs for three meals

Wow, thanks for all the replies. TrillianAstra, I agree, I think they are small portions. I always used to cook 200g for DP and me, although he would always have a bit more than me. DS has 60g for a main meal and he's 6! I suppose it depends what else you're having with it. So no one really knows how much water pasta takes on when it's cooked? Ghosteditor, good tip about weighing out the bowls as I dish up, I might try that!

A portion on slimming world is about 100g dried. But their portions are big.I have still lost 3 stone with such portions however!

Well done Mumcah! That's brilliant!
