brown lentils - what exactly are they?

I have a recipe which calls for brown lentils. Are they the same as Puy lentils (which appear to be brown in colour)?
If not, can I just use Puy lentils instead?

puy lentil are actually a type of green lentil, even though they look quite brown, but that said both hold their shape well in cooking so you can probably get away with subbing the brown ones for puy...
