Yes, you can. They normally end up closer textured. I have an apple sauce one somewhere I can dig out if you're interested.

Here's a chocolate cake.

I love currants Grin

Love chocolate more though Wink

Thank you.

Why do some recipes call for bicarb and some baking powder?

they do different things - baking powder makes cakes rise, its often used with plain flour instead of self raising and bicarb neutralises acid, so is less commonly used

Bicarb doesn't keep well. any old pots you have empty contents and put in a dish and keep in fridge - keeps fridge smelling fresh

my son was lactose intolerant when he was ill and i made him ' normal' cakes by using
'egg subsitute powder' from the health shop
it works !

Thank you all.

I'm not a big baker but I made a cake last week for my sister's 22nd (all was good except my icing kept falling apart so I had to keep adding patches Grin my fault for using liquid instead of paste colouring)
My nan said she couldn't eat it as her tongue swells if she has anything that has egg in it so I wanted to make her a cake to make up for it when I visit her next week.

If a recipe calls for Bicarb do you have to use it?
