I need to make a Shrek cake - anyone help?

It's my daughter's birthday in a few weeks and I'd like to make her cake.

She adores Shrek so I think she'd love a Shrek cake. I wouldn't say that I am the best cake maker or decorator but I'm prepared to give it a go.

Does anyone have any ideas of how on earth I can do this?

I was asked to do a dragon cake recently - at the last moment by DS2 (4). I am good at making cakes, but shall we say that my decorating skills are limited. Limited to plonking on icing and sprinkling maltesers on top!

Also (a bit of perspective)...he asked on the Thurs, party Sat am, and I was working ft and visiting my father up north in hospital.

Anyway, I had a bash with icing....and the result was not bad, although it arguably looked like DS2 had made the dragon.

What I did was trace Zog (of Julia Donaldson fame) and then roll out some coloured icing. Trying to work out how to send photo, but failing! It looked dodgy, but DS2 recognised him!

Good luck and have fun!

I have managed to do a link...check out dodgy dragon on my profile page.

You can buy rice paper toppers with images on for £6-10, which isn't too expensive if you are saving money by making your own sponge. It might be an option if the icing idea doesn't work out.

Edible Cake Toppers is a website that have Shrek designs. They will customise the rice paper with text if you want. I haven't tried using the site so I can't vouch for the service but it seems like a pretty good website.

Hope it works out well.

Fedupwithdeployment I think your dragon is pretty creative. Not dodgy at all. :)

I did one. I bought a white iced birthday cake from M and S, and some ready to roll icing from Sainsburys. Added green food colouring to the icing, which gave the right shade of green, thank goodness. Rolled icing flat, cut out shape of Shrek's face. Added edging and features in black icing pen and wording in red. It looked really good.

Thanks Charlie!

lots of tips here

NotAnApple · 21/01/2011 15:04

Oh wow! Thanks so much for this, I posted and then completely forgot about it.

Fantastic!

Thanks Fedup your dragon looks brilliant!

Any pictures Acanthus I need to copy, I have no creativity of my own! I like your idea of buying the ready-iced cake. I think I shall do that too.

Scurry thanks for the link. I am going to check that out now.

Charlie thanks for the link, I might do cupcakes with those on around the side.

I completely have no time for this but I am optimistic...

I did the dragon from Dhrek for dd's cake at Christmas. I printed out an outline picture from internet (if you google shrek colouring in you get lots of outlines) then used writing icing to trace the design onto wafer paper and painted it in with food clouring. Then just cut it out and stuck it onto the cake. Possibly a bit of a cheat but it looked good!

NotAnApple · 21/01/2011 15:20

hmmm....too ambitious?

scurryfunge · 21/01/2011 15:22

Wow -what a cake! It would scare the hell out of me to try to make that.

NotAnApple · 21/01/2011 15:22

Oh hi Indith sorry, I missed your post.

I all for cheating. I might go to our local cake supply shop and buy some of the bits you mention and see if I can do that.

You know, DD is 2. She will probably only be excited for 3 minutes before going off to do something else.

haha, I know. I can't even imagine how you'd start. I think mine would be sits of swiss roll stuck on with jam and covered with green icing.

I could always dim the lights...

Sorry to bump...... but how did you get on NotAnApple? My DD turns 2 end of April and is mega Shrek mad so want to make her a Shrek cake but a bit scared!!!!!!

There is a gruffalo cake (face) on the gruffalo website which I managed for DS1 last year. Change the colour of the icing and I'm sure it could be a Shrek face quite easily! www.gruffalo.com/upload/gruffalo_cake_sheet1.pdf

log onto cake central website, its fab, there are endless galleries on there and if needs be you can post this on there.
