dried cod

I have a new found love of saltfish and ackee. I got my dried cod out to soak today, and it STINKS!! I don't remember dried cod reeking to high heaven before, Is this safe to eat?

I'm not a fussy eater/cook, eeewing about "stinky-winky" fish, but this can not be normal.

Yes, it would be abnormal if it didn't stink.
