I love Hummus and would love my 7 month old to try some. Any reason why not and does anyone have a recipe I could try?

Hiya - don't think there's any reason why not - my DD is a hummus addict and has loved it since she was about the same age!

Shop bought hummus is very salty but if you make your own obviously you control the amount of salt you add. If you have any concerns about allergies it might be best to delay it, as sesame seeds (in tahini) can cause allergies in the same way that nuts can. I would personally wait until your baby is a little older as it does contain quite a few foods that are hard for younger babies (pulses, citrus fruit, garlic) - it would have given my son terrible wind and a sore bum at that age - but maybe your baby has guts of steel!

Friend passed on this recipe :-

1 can chickpeas
1 tablespoon tahini (sesame seed paste) - optional
2 cloves crushed garlid
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt seasoning to taste

Combine everything in a big bowl, leaving the water from the can of chickpeas
to the side. Blend the contents together using a hand blender, adding the
chickpea water until the desired consistency is reached.

You could hold off the salt but agree it may be a bit harsh on a young baby's tum.

I didn't bother with the tahini, but for the growd ups I do add a few chilli flakes and some slightly crushed cumin seeds! yum

oh and if you stir in some caramelised onions then it's even yummier!!

Am I wrong. But thought hummus was spelt Houmous.
well Im sure i saw it written like that on a houmous dip at work.

aloha · 03/10/2005 14:41

my dd likes it too (7 months). She eats a lot of garlic.

frannyfright · 03/10/2005 18:15

You can spell it either way. In fact you can spell it humous as well. It's an approximation of the Arabic word so the English spelling is open to interpretation.

It's in a baby and toddler cookery book that I've got under the 6-9 month heading.
