I know I wont get the nice edges but is there anything else that goes against using a sponge tin to make a tart/flan?

The sponge tin will probably be deeper than a tart tin so you may need extra filling but that's all I can think of.

I use cake tins all the time as I don't even own a flan dish. They are a bit small though, so I end up making two.

think that I'll go for doing 2 small ones using my sponge tins - have a huge flan tin but always end up tearing the pastry in an effort to cover the damn thing. have some left over stilton that I don't want to waste.
