i have a bag of "washed potatoes" (unopened) with "Display until 16th September". Can I use them or should I chuck em?!

Get yer chits out! (runs away sniggering like a 12-yr-old)

I cut them off, test them for being too soft and examine for greeen bits and make my judgement. Doesn't occur to me to check the date TBH.

Seriously though, I grow me own spuds and so, no sell-by dates! If stored correctly,(eg in dark, cool place in a sack, checked every now and again to remove the odd yukky one) spuds I dig up in September often last for months!

Green bits can have poisons in them called glycoalkoloids which can cause nasty stomach upsets so never eat green potatoes.

If they are soft they probably won't taste that nice either.
