I've not made it yet, but don't want to make it too early and then it goes off!

Thanks

How long does an ordinary fruit cake without alcohol last? I used to make a good fruitcake last most of term time when I went away to school. Admittedly it got a bit dry after about 8 weeks though.

If you soak your fruit in orange or apple juice before you start, it should stay moist. Anyway, a good cake won't have to last too long as it will be eaten soon enough!

A few years?

It is good to consume within same day. At most day after you can use it. After it, it may harmful for health. some times it cause food poison and many more.

I don't wish to offend Punita, but I think that you are not English, and possibly have a diffrent idea of what a Christmas Cake is.

If it is full of dried fruit, what is there to go off?

SSD - I hadnt thought about soaking in juice! Thanks

Astra - our wedding cake didnt last 8 years and that was laced with alcohol and colvered in solid royal icing and stored correctly!
