there must be!
something involving pouring alcohol over it?
or could I do something sort of bread-and-butter pudding style but with cake?

Instant Chocolate trifle?

Slice up the sponge are place it on the bottom of a bowl.

Get a couple of tins of black cherries and pour the juice all over the sponge. Add some brandy at this point if you want)

Tip the cherries on top of the wet sponge.

Make up some custard, melt a bar of chocolate and mix the two together.

Pour the chocolate trifle over the fruit.

Put into the fridge for about an hour.

Pour cream over the custard.

Grate chocolate over the cream and add toasted flaked almonds.

Delicious, and very, very bad for you!

I fear attempting to use up this leftover cake will turn out to be a false economy....

Baileys, no! Sugar syrup with a bottle dash of kirsch. Or sweet sherry.

Black forest trifle.

well that was the best trifle I've ever had.

dh got some brandy and cointreau and burnt the alcohol off the poured it over the sponge. Layer of tinned mandarins (we couldn't find cherries), tinned custard and whipped cream.

I love tinned mandarins - choc and orange trifle. Yum!
