Sunday roast - alternatives?

We love our family sunday meal, usually a pretty traditional roast joint plus roasties and veg.

Always delicious, children adore it. However, I am bit stuck in a rut of alternating chicken, pork, occasionally lamb, even more occasionally beef.....

Don't want to completely change eg. to a lasagne or something, as I would have a riot on my hands. The family all love the roast, but what can I do that isn't just the same old thing?

Or, if no one else has complained, do I just stick with the rotation? It was lamb last week so need to be a bit more thrifty this week whatever I end up with!! Ocado doing two chickens for £7, so that is seriously tempting, but just doesn't feel very exciting!

TIA.

When I forget to defrost the meat I do sausages with roast veggies. So it's like roast dinner but not quite so much.

On a similar theme - I do chicken breasts, or pork chops instead of a joint. Stick them in with the roast spuds and they all do in an hour max so it is quick too. And cheaper.

I guess if the rest are happy with it just try to get variety in with different veggies sometimes.

how about lamb shanks with roasties and veg etc?

Sausages is a good one. We sometimes have a baked potato with roast chicken.

Sometimes we have roast meditteranean veg with a bit of grilled meat. That's quite nice.

Fish? Whole salmon or something?

There was a brilliant recipe on BBC Good Food for chicken breast that you roll and stuff. Looked good.

have a look at the Good Food website. This lamb is delicious, and a bit different. And for beef.

Also, try the recipes here - Anchovies' kleftiko is out of this world, and really easy to make.

What about a nice homemade pie?

FakePlasticTrees · 08/12/2010 12:57

toad in the hole

venison steaks or venison stew/hotpot

How about sausages and roast veg? ( suggested by others) or cauliflower cheese with roast potatoes and roast chicken legs.
Or roast salmon/ turbot with roast veg?

pork fillet stuffed with stuffing and apples, wrapped in parma ham/bacon then pastry? Cheaper than a joint of pork and easy to do.

Pork shoulder, braised overnight in cider and then blasted in the oven to get crackling. Strain the juices through damp kitchen paper in a sieve - keeps the fat out and boil down to make lovely glue-y gravy. Should be able to find good quality pork shoulder for under £4/kg. When we left the uk in 2006 we paid £1.10/lb, and it could have walked to the butcher's.

These are great ideas, thank you. A good wholesome pie might prevent a riot, and lamb shanks is bang on the money...

Hoorah, sunday dinner will take on a bit of new dimension as I work my way through these...

Thanks very much. Smile
