In laws arriving today, I have a 1.8kg unsmoked gammon joint in fridge and wondered how to cook it?? Was going to serve with coliflour cheese and roasted new potatoes but am open to suggestions. I do not have a slow cooker. Thanks for reading!

We put cloves in ours (score it with a sharp knive and stick about 20/30 of them in)and glaze it with honey sometimes, and just stick it in the oven (are there guidelines on cooking time on your joint? I'd say 180 but not sure how long for...)

I would boil it - it'll carve better and you'll get stock for delicious lentil soup.

Mmm! Might strick cloves in and honey and boil. Any idea how long I should boil for. Doesn't say on packaging.

Boil for 25 minutes per 450g. So for your joint, 1hour 40mins. Don't boil with the cloves, instead, cover with cold water, add an onion cut in half, skin and all, a carrot, roughly chopped, a stick of celery, some whole peppercorns and a couple of bay leaves. When it finishes boiling, keep the liquid for soup, and remove the skin from the ham if there is any, but leave the fat. Score a diamond criss-cross pattern on the fat, and stud the point of each diamond with a clove. Mix 15 g mustard and 55 g brown sugar into a paste and rub onto fat. Bung in medium oven for 30 mins. Let it rest a bit before you carve. lovely!

Do that but boil in coca cola first. Sounds weird, tastes wonderful. Once you've boiled it cover it in mustard, honey and cloves and then roast to dry it off a bit and make the mustard/honey a bit crusty. You can make gravy with the coke which will not taste like coke any more.Grin

OK, only do Grandhighpoohba's but boil in coke not water. I promise!

happysunshinedays · 13/11/2010 13:04

Coke? Seriously?? Don't really like coke. Does that matter?

I tried it with coke and wasn't that keen. But then I don't like coke. Plus no stock for soup!

Jux · 13/11/2010 21:40

Too late now I know, but I loathe coke and have never managed more than a sip of the vile stuff; I try it from time to time to see if I like it better so have had about 4 sips in my life.

It was good with the gammon, but obviously not everyone does. You do have stock as the liquid from the boiling doesn't taste like coke!

Groundhighpoohba

I boil in water with a couple of bay leaves, cloves and peppercorns.

Once cooked I roast with a orange juice, mustard and honey sauce/coating.

happysunshinedays · 14/11/2010 09:40

Right, didn't go for coke this time, partly because I didn't have any. Might try it some time. I basically did Grandhighpoohba's method but with honey instead of sugar. Was very yummy and seemed to go down well with the in laws! Thanks all for the input. xx

I don't use coke cos I hate the stuff but do sometimes use apple juice or cider in with the water.

shopperaddict · 03/12/2013 16:03

would it work if the gammon has no rind
