looking for a simple chocolate birthday cake recipe. Have a sponge recipe but looking for one that gives me a filling and the icing etc on top as don't normally do chocolate cakes. Happy to buy a book but no time to browse so recommendations welcome!

I always make Nigella's old fashioned chocolate cake. For DS's bday, DH's birthday, greedy friends. Its straightforward and tastes divine.

oh and btw I do the "long way round" ie creaming butter, sugar then adding eggs slowly etc with an electric whisk rather than the all in one fp method she's so fond of. I like a bit of rise in my cakes and all in one fp cakes never rise quite enough for me.

Ohh, I shall be lurking as DH has begged me to make him a chocolate cake for his birthday.

I looked through the recipe section on here, and found this chocolate layer cake that looks fab.

But if there are any better suggestions I may change my mind.

Easiest chocolate in the world. No beating required, takes about 5 mins to prepare and makes a very light, fluffy cake. Plus, it's yummy, which is always a plus!

How long do yoy think the nigella one would last?

There is one right here:

I made it last year, very easy and very tasty - I would halve the amounts of cream for the icing, though, it was a little runny.

The Nigella one lasts very little time here Grin

If you wrap it in greaseproof and foil it will keep for a few days, then assemble and ice it and then once cut a few more days.

thanks so much - they all sound good and glad they are recommended. Might end up trying them all!
