Anyone heard of a Herman Friendship cake?

I've just been given a portion of cake mixture by a friend, with instructions to add to it, give some of it to other friends and bake my own piece.

I think it's quite a sweet idea, but I can't believe I'm not going to poison myself - anyone heard of this?!

No sorry.

GailFawkes · 01/11/2010 20:39

Isn't it a German friendship cake? Or maybe I heard it wrong all those years ago Grin My mum used to make these, very nice!

There is a Herman one too - it's Amish! Well you learn a new thing every day and all that. Bet it's lovely! Smile

oh! i had one as a child... it was delicious too mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i've always wanted to get another one

Lilymaid · 01/11/2010 20:46

I had some cake that a friend made once and it was lovely. I had no luck making my own starter - it went mouldy (cracks in mixing bowl must have harboured nasties).

I remember one when I was a child, too, though can't remember whether it was German. It was amazing - fermented, smellt really boozy and swelled up to 4 x its original size. Tasted wonderful when cooked, but don't forget to take some portions of the mix out and pass them on before you do ...

MrsRhettKilledTheButler · 01/11/2010 20:52

yes, thats exactly how i remember mine jkklpu :)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Herman is delicious. I had a few a few months ago when he did the rounds. Yumola.

Well, that all sounds quite positive, thanks!!

Why doesn't the milk in the starter mixture go nasty, though?

and was eating it for ages, mine, my friends, their friends who were also my friends, my mum, her friends etc etc

nannyl · 01/11/2010 21:24

mine was definitley herman (not german btw)

nobiggy · 01/11/2010 21:25

My mum had one!

I have some recollection of making the cake up with pie filling?

She did it two times then got fed up with looking after it.

just enjoy your 'Herman', a genuine & lovely idea from friends for other friends/family, and a gorgeous cake in my experience.. its not going to poison you, unless you don't trust your 'friends'! Grin

put loadsa apple /cinnamon in mine.. yum yum!

the scrummiest cake I've ever made!! Seems fairly foolproof (mine was made from one already passed through more than a few friends/family, and is still going)

milkmoustache · 07/02/2011 15:03

No you won't get poisoned, but after dutifully feeding and mixing my Herman mixture the end result was a huge anti-climax, nothing very special about it at all. Would rather start a cake of my choice from scratch any day!

cakeywakey · 07/02/2011 15:04

Yuuuuuum! I remember these doing the rounds in the 80s, scrummy!
