Why won't my custard set?

Real eggs 'n' milk custard, the sort you cook in a pan or double-boiler on the hob. It always sets fine when I bake it.

Has it got enough sugar in?

spacedonkey · 15/09/2005 14:56

not enough eggs?

WigWamBam · 15/09/2005 14:56

Too much milk?

motherinferior · 15/09/2005 14:56

It doesn't set that much, PC. It is meant to be runnier than the packet stuff.

PrettyCandles · 15/09/2005 20:49

But then how do I make trifle? What I don't understand is that I used to make trifle years ago, before I had ever heard of the packet stuff, and it set wonderfully.

I seduced dh with trifle .

But now when I make trifle...well, he's charitable and calls it Trifle Soup. Wouldn't do for seduction . Tastes just as nice though . Anyway, who's going to get seduced when there are a pair of children diving into the Trifle Soup at the same time as us?

Trifle isn't supposed to be set though

GeraldGiraffe · 15/09/2005 20:52

Just call it Zuppe Inglese

PrettyCandles · 15/09/2005 20:59

Isn't it? It's so long since I seduced dh that I don't remember (the trifle, that is - I certainly remember the seduction ).

Zuppa Inglese - oooo I had some of that in Italy yonks ago. The yummiest ice-cream ever!

Zuppa Inglese isn't icecream- it's trifle. Must have had zuppa inglese flavoured icecream!

CarolinaMoon · 15/09/2005 21:10

zuppa inglese is deffo the best ice-cream flavour - lots of little spongey and fruity bits in custardy ice-cream. Yum! And how could you resist something called English Soup?

PrettyCandles · 15/09/2005 21:14

Absolutely - that's why I tried it! It certainly didn't look attractive in the tub (a bit like my trifle after the first servings have been dug out).

Oooo, just had an idea: make the trifle as usual, but instead of custard make custard ice-cream! Defo no left-overs from that!
