Mashed potatoes to make fondant????

Please tell me my mum is mad! Im making peppermint creams, dipped in dark chocolate (yum) for little xmas gifts and my mum says to mash a potato, and add icing sugar to it and it makes a nicer fondant than using an egg white?!?!?

Has anyone else heard this?

thanks in advance

No - but then didn't Delia make a chocolate cake using mashed potato in her How to Cheat book? So there might be something in it.

Ooh. Erm. That sounds rather repulsive really.

There's such a thing as fondant potatoes, might she have got the two muddled up?

I'd stick with the egg white if I were you.

Mashed potato and icing sugar makes macaroon. It is delicious, sweet, melting and fab. You dip it in melted chocolate and then toasted coconut.

It is a wee bit different from making fondant with egg white but much nicer and vegan friendly if you use vegan chocolate. My children (and the old dears at church) love it when I make macaroons.

I remember in high school making "Creme Eggs" - and we used mashed potato with icing sugar for the inside of the egg :)

We made macaroons and they have mashed potato in them, so I imagine your mum is correct.

Blimey, does this mean I have to say sorry for mocking her? Mashed potato makes fondant, who'd have thought?
