Absolutely sickened and appalled by what I have just discovered in a pot of Organix baby food

My son loves Organix Fruity Chicken and Wholegrain rice baby meal and has been having it on a regular basis since he was 6 months old. However, today when I opened his lunchtime pot I was horrified to find a large lump of what I hope is chicken, but appears to be some kind of internal organ and not in the best of condition.

I feel absolutely sickened and only hope this entire batch has not been contaminated as this food is supposed to be for babies from 4 months old. My confidence in the company is shattered, I am absolutely appalled. I have emailed them with these images. Now excuse me while I go and throw up.

At least it was not pureed into the food....

yuck.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 29/10/2010 13:36

please don't dispose of the item until you heard back from the manufacturer

Trading standards/FSA might need to know too

BarnacleBill · 29/10/2010 13:38

Yes, yuk. But think about it logically - how can anything ahve been 'contaminated'?
It is presumably a bit of chicken - not a bit that you would want to eat admittedly, but chicken nonetheless. Nothing foreign or contaminatory (I might have just made up that word).

I'm more shocked at the age range tbh - and I'm not someone to get hysterical over weaning but am very surprised they are still allowed to market food for 4 month olds.

redshoesbluefrock · 29/10/2010 13:39

DTWD- you are right that there is a risk the whole batch could be contaminated. Yuk.

Gat in touch with the manufacturers and food standards agency ASAP. Whatever it is, it doesn't look good....

QuintessentialShadows · 29/10/2010 13:40

The most unpalatable meal I have ever digested, was a polish traditional soup, containing chicken lungs and intestines. It was still chicken, just not the parts of the chicken I would have chosen for a celebratory meal.....

Summerbird73 · 29/10/2010 13:40

oh god that is appalling

DH used to work for ICI (who manufacture baby food as well as paint and other things Hmm ) and as a result he wouldnt let us use any baby food on DS - simply because he used to see this kind of stuff all the time.

agree with BALD - dont throw ANYTHING away including the pot as it needs to be tested.

See you in the tabloids tomorrow then! Wink

Oh dear, I daren't look at the picture... I've never bought their purées but have recently started buying their finger foods for my DS.

supergreenuk · 29/10/2010 13:44

Yeah keep it as they can test to see what it is and you can request they let you know. I am horrified as you trust these kinds of foods.

Guacamole · 29/10/2010 13:44

Okay I braved it and looked... Disturbed as to what part of the chicken that is?

winnybella · 29/10/2010 13:44

Yuk.

QS- eeeewwww. We do have a tripe soup, true, but tripe AND lungs? Seriously? Which part of Poland were you served this delicacy, if you don't mind me asking?

I have kept the pot. Will get in touch with FSA too.

..the kids in my class used to eat Chicken bottoms as a snack. and gnaw at the legs in our soup. yech.

although, yes that shouldn't be in the pot...probably not dangerous.

QuintessentialShadows · 29/10/2010 13:53

Winnybella, in London! But the family is from Warsaw.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/10/2010 13:54

Judging by the colour, it looks like a gall bladder (if chickens actually have them)

Guacamole · 29/10/2010 13:57

A gallbladder? Eeeeewwwwww.
Although I'm quite squeamish about offal I'm very concerned about the choking hazard...
OP please keep us informed!

DTWD · 29/10/2010 14:08

My main concern is not that a piece of meat is in the pot, it is that it is not in the best of conditions. It has a slimey layer on in, is greenish (although that could be because its an organ) and the smell is not too good. To me it looks like an old piece of cooked meat has got mixed up in the batch. This is why I am worried about the safety of the food.

navyeyelasH · 29/10/2010 14:13

The thing that's ironic about this post is that everyone judges Mcdonalds, but I bet they use better quality meat than Organixs!

Bleugh though, how upsetting for you, I suspect it's just a grim piece of chicken though Sad.

FairyArmadillo · 29/10/2010 14:14

I don't want to look! And I'm hoping I'm still safe with their packets of cheese flavoured polystyrene puffs DS loves.

winnybella · 29/10/2010 14:14

QS- I'm from Warsaw and I have never ever heard of it. I do recall similary disqusting things were sometimes served in so-called milk bars during the communism as not much was available, but I can assure you a chicken lung and tripe soup is not in Polish culinary canon.Traditional, no way. Bleugh.

winnybella · 29/10/2010 14:15

disgusting, that is

whyamibothering · 29/10/2010 14:15

Surprised it could fit in the pot - I think I would freak out if I came across that.... Eugh.

Frrrrightattendant · 29/10/2010 14:17

Put it in the freezer in a sealed bag.

They will almost certainly want it back.

winnybella · 29/10/2010 14:19

It must have been just a piece of chicken.

I know that in canned foods industry they have certain allowances for foreign material ie a couple of mice a year is fine etc.

I would think the regulations for baby food are much more stringent.
