Icing for writing on cakes - what type do I need?

We have had a productive day baking cupcakes which we've iced with chocolate buttercream icing. Ds now wants to write on them (using a piping bag). What sort of icing should I make? Would a mix of icing sugar and water be okay?

Yes, or you can buy little tubes of coloured icing - think Supercook do them in red, yellow, blue and black from memory. Saves faffing with piping bag, icing syringe etc.

Thanks. Good idea about the Supercook ones I'll get some for another time. Ds is very keen to use the piping bag unfortunately. I'll be posting soon to ask how you actually clean it - it appears to be made of cloth.

Use as much icing as poss, turn bag inside out. Get dc to lick/scrap off as much icing as poss. Stick bag in dishwasher. Grin

Good idea about the dishwasher. We didn't get to the icing lettering stage as grandma popped in and ds wanted to eat as many muffins as possible!
