Any idea what I could use instead of Barley Wine? I can't imagine what it is and can't find it anywhere (well, not on Ocado, anyway! Wink)

Thank you!

Guiness, Robinson's Old Tom, strong lager, ordinary bitter beer. Barley wine is just strong beer at 9%abv - drink of choice with vodka for getting pissed in the 70s, ditto cherry b and cider. [Showing age emoticon - even tho' drank bacardi, lime and lemonade]

Thank you! The recipe asks for stout too, so presumably I could just use that instead.

Stout can be quite sort of 'burnt sugar' bitter, whereas barley wine is just so of hoppy bitter. If the recipe contains treacle, I wouldn't be too bothered, could just use a mixture of say orange juice and beer. It all depends on the quantities.

Thanks a million, TB. I'be got the stout and will use the mix you suggest instead of barley wine.

Tbh I would taste a bit, just to make sure that the balance of taste is right - neither too bitter, nor too sweet.

It's sold in cans and looks like beer or ginger beer rather than in wine bottles - waitrose and sainsburys definitely have it.
