All you cake decorators - advice re. sugarpaste Lotta !?

I've been asked by DD's best friend's mum to make her birthday cake.

The birthday girl wants a Charlie and Lola theme, specifically Lola, Lotta and Sizzles sitting on top of the cake. I've made a trial Lola and she worked out fairly well (pic on profile).

Then I tried last night to make Lotta and although she looks right, I found that when I tried to attach her head to her body, the afro hairdo made the head so heavy that it kept tipping over, despite a couple of strategically inserted strands of uncooked spaghetti(iyswim)!

Anyone got any tips for either 1)keeping a heavy head upright on a model or 2) making a hollow afro out of sugarpaste?

I'm hoping some clever MNer out there will have had this or a similar problem to solve... :o

Don't know about clever [blushing], but when I tried to make balloons one year as if floating of the cake I used toothpicks as they were too heavy for cake wire!!

Hope it helps!

Either toothpicks or straws.
