Does anyone have a 'recipe' for this. I made some this morning adapting a Nigella recipe, but they just don't taste the way I remember from when I was a kid - and there didn't seem to be enough chocolate either!

Things never taste like they did when you were a kid. Did you remeber to put golden syrup in?

I never use syrup - I just use rice crispies (or more often cornflakes) and Dairy Milk. Melt the Dairy Milk, mix it with the Cornflakes - and don't be stingy with it! I think they are yummiest that way....

I did put the golden syrup in prufrock- then the chocolate mixture (chocolate and butter) went really thick and stodgy and it was really hard to coat the rice crispies. (what a sad little life I lead)

If the syrup was cooler than the melted chocolate & butter, might it have set the chocolate when you added it? I@ve made them as a child with cocoa powder rather than chocolate but can'tremember the quantities. I've also made them with Oakmaiden's Dairy Milk method and also melted mars bars and a mix of ordinary chocolate/mars bars which is less sickly than all mars bars!

Melt a big dollop of butter along with golden syrup in a pan, add a couple of spoons of hot chocolate powder and mix it all together. Add Rice Krispies or cornflakes, and raisins too if you want. It is delicious. I think there is an old thread somewhere about this.

I make toffee crispies - melt a bag of toffees and a bag of marshmallows in a big heavy pan then add kripsies, pour into a dish and score it into peices, don't eat it until its cool though! thats if you can resist it

allatsea · 14/08/2003 18:49

I think that the syrup was colder which would explain the thickening up. I like the idea of adding just a big lump of chocolate - and lou33 version too, raisins too...practically makes it health food then doesn't it?

Melted down Mars Bars are great for this!!!

When they've cooled, melt some nice milk chocolate, like Galaxy, then drizzle it over the top. Wait till that sets, then melt some Milkybar and drizzle that over the top. It tastes gorgeous but involves waiting far too long for your cakes.
