Quick veg soup question

I am doing my online grocery order right now, if I want to make a wintery vegetable soup, what veg should I get to put in it? Carrot/parsnip will be too sweet without other things to make it savoury, won't it?

I made a white winter soup with celery, onion, parsnip and cream. Yummy....

Get barley too.

leeks, they add lots of good flavour to the base, and celery.

Celery, good point, thanks. I normally make summery tomatoey soups but feel the need for somethign thick and slightly starchy.

I like - onions, leeks, carrots, potatoes, barley, stock, thyme and rosemary. Yum.

Carrots and parsnips (or sweet potatoes) good in one made with coconut milk and spices.

Ah yes you will see me here on Sunday asking 'what herbs for my veg soup?' :)

if in doubt put in a big dollop of Pataks curry paste after you've sweated the veg-spiced veg soup is lovely and is just the job for using up manky veg at the bottom of the fridge

I agree that celery is essential. how about butternut squash?
